Charisma is the result of hard work

Leadership conferences sometimes focus on the topic of 'magical thinking' - that charismatic ability to generate first-rate ideas without apparent effort.

But new research suggests that this quality may quite simply be a matter of perspective - that charisma may just be due to individuals hiding their hard work.

Students from California State University, the University of California and the Columbia University Business School have released a study that questions the value of charisma in terms of business management.

The publication postulated that the perception of a manager's 'magical' ability to predict future trends or think outside the box is the result of careful planning, a diligent work ethic and leadership training programs.

Research consisted of several studies that measured participants' perceptions. It showed that when a manager performed well in the absence of any apparent business mechanic, the leader was attributed as being visionary.

The implications of the study could be far reaching, with the 'visionary' managers being seen as possessing magnetic personal qualities that could inspire long term loyalty from employees and clients alike.

Further, participants' expectations of their future performance potential increased, as opposed to the manager who succeeded through long hours and consistent effort who was seen as excelling in administrative duties alone.
